Who we are.
OYA Black Arts Coalition (OBAC) is a Toronto-based non-profit for film that welcomes all Black Canadian creatives. We believe in a community-based approach that is “for us, and by us.” We are here to support you, whether you get your start at 18 or at 80.
OYA Black Arts Coalition provides training, educational, employment, networking and collaboration opportunities for Black emerging and established film, television and screen-based media artists.
 
Role of the Board of Directors
As one of up to 8 Board Directors at OBAC you will be responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of the organization.
 
The Board of Directors of OBAC is responsible for:
·      Strategic planning
·      Financial oversight including risk identification and oversight.
·      Oversight of management through the selection and supervision of the Management Staff
·      Stakeholder communication and accountability
·      Monitoring compliance with legal requirements.
·      Ensuring adequate financial resources- including actively participating in all fundraising initiatives
 
Members of the Board shall be fully supportive of the vision, mission, and values of OBAC and shall reflect this support in all of their Board work and how they represent the organization externally.
 
Your Experience and Skills 
To address a wide variety of strategic and governance issues, one or more of the following in-depth experiences and skills are highly valued: 
·      Fundraising
·      Financial/Accounting
·      Legal
·      Film and Media
·      Education
·      Human Resources
·      Communications

In addition, we prioritize those with: 

  • Strong racial equity lens
  • An appreciation for the distinct roles of governance and management
  • Strong strategic thinking, good listening, and excellent teamwork skills
  • The ability to make sound decisions based on the analysis of the information received and to maintain solidarity with the Board’s decisions
  • Availability for active participation in the work of the Board (commitment of 4-6 hours bi-monthly per board member)
